This matter-of-fact approach has been of the essence in the development of Rhineland –Palatinate - created in 1946 from former Prussian, Hessian and Bavarian provinces - into a flourishing federal state with a clear identity. Another key factor was the state’s location at the very centre of Europe, at the heart of this increasingly united continent, sharing borders with Belgium, France and Luxembourg.

Full speed ahead!

Today Rhineland-Palatinate is a self-confident federal state with a healthy economy. Its high export figures reflect the state’s development into a key centre for German foreign trade. This is rooted in the expansion and evolution of the manufacturing sector, the region’s transport infrastructure and its schools and universities. In addition to the industrial sector, tourism, agriculture and forestry are significant factors in the economy.

Its six wine-growing areas make Rhineland-Palatinate Germany’s number one wine state. Rieslings from the Mosel rank among the world’s most prized wines.

Rhineland-Palatinate is a popular holiday destination thanks to its extensive countryside and a cultural history spanning more than 2,000 years – amenities that also make it a highly attractive place to live and work.

Rapid knowledge transfer is also guaranteed, with a dense mesh of 20 universities and technical colleges, not to mention the many application-oriented research institutes, technology clusters and business start-up centres.

Rhineland-Palatinate’s regions can look back on a rich and diverse history, which resonates in the state’s cultural life. 500 castles and palaces, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which boasts World Heritage status and includes the world-famous Lorelei Rocks, Trier’s Roman architecture and the cathedrals in Mainz, Speyer, Worms and Trier testify to Rhineland-Palatinate’s cultural heritage. Alongside this, contemporary culture and exciting projects for the future flourish in state, city-run and independent theatres, in concert halls and a plethora of art initiatives.

Over 400 museums cover a historical spectrum ranging from the Roman era to the present day. Tourists with a love of culture are drawn to over 50 festivals set amidst beautiful landscapes and in historic venues. Hundreds of events showcase avant-garde, provocative and intriguing projects as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer.
