The Bundesrat and the French Senate established both a Friendship Group with the aim to enhance relations between Germany and France and to intensify cooperation between these two parliamentary bodies.

Foundation

The Friendship Groups came into being as a result of declarations by the Bundesrat and the French Senate concerning establishment of such groups. On the German side, the Friendship Group was constituted in 1996 and is composed of members of the Bundesrat and the federal states' envoys to the Federation. The French group is made up of members of the French Senate.

Working method

As a general rule, the German-French Friendship Groups come together once a year for a meeting that spans several days. These meetings are held alternately in Germany and France and serve to exchange current political issues relevant to the bilateral relationship.
