The areas dealt with by the Committee on Health reflect those fields within the sphere of competence of the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).

The Bundesrat's Committee on Health focuses on the following topics:

  • General health policy
  • Pharmaceutical products
  • Health sector professions
  • Biomedicine
  • Health protection
  • Health care
  • Hospitals
  • Health insurance
  • Medicinal products
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Preventive health care

The Bundesrat's Committee on Health is in charge of addressing bills from the Federal Government submitted to the Bundesrat via the Federal Ministry for Health in the aforementioned areas; the committee also deals with bills from the state ministries competent in this field.

The committee is also involved in addressing bills primarily handled by any of the other 15 Bundesrat committees if these impinge on the policy areas listed above.

In addition to examining draft bills and ordinances (implementing provisions) within national legislation, the Committee on Health also considers a range of European Union proposals tabled in areas where the EU devises health policy.
