The areas for which the Committee on Internal Affairs is responsible correspond approximately to the sphere of competence of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI).

The committee is in particular responsible for considering the following issues:

  • Constitutional law and law on citizenship and nationality
  • Law on foreign nationals and asylum
  • Electoral law
  • Passports and identity cards law
  • General administrative law
  • Municipal affairs
  • Law on the consequences of war
  • Law and order
  • Civil protection and disaster control
  • Public service
  • Communication technologies
  • Sport
  • National representation

The Committee on Internal Affairs is responsible for examining bills that have been drawn up under the aegis of the Federal Ministry of the Interior or one of the state Ministries of the Interior, or that fall within their sphere of competence. The committee is also involved in discussions of other bills if the policy areas mentioned above are affected.
