The Secretary General draws up the provisional agenda for the plenary, advises the President on matters pertaining to the Rules of Procedure and parliamentary procedure, as well as assisting in counting votes. The Secretary General sits next to the Bundesrat President during the plenary sessions.
The Secretary General is constantly in touch with the Bundestag, the Federal Government and the 16 federal state governments, and maintains links with parliaments abroad. She prepares and attends the Permanent Advisory Council’s meetings.
The Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General are appointed, dismissed and authorised to retire by the President with prior approval from the Bundesrat.
